"Yule Magic" or smoke and mirrors produced by Odin's Beard Crafts
Updated: May 17
By Odin's Beard Crafts is a new company to the page which will be have the infamous Docks Bearded Reviews scrutiny test where I rip apart everything leaving the product used, abused and laying in a puddle of its own oil. A relatively new brand onto the scene who have passed their CPSR reports ensuring the products being sold are safe and most importantly legal.
Today's review is to microanalysis Yule Magic and see if this product truly is magic or if its all smoke and mirrors.
Outside The Bottle
Obviously sticking with the ever famous Viking theme is always a risk. A highly used concept with a small amount of opportunity to really stand out.
By Odin's Beard Crafts however is in the small minority of brands which actually manage to pull this off. A matte black bottle with a wood effect dropper top lid is something I have never seen before. Using tan, white and black colours to make the label pop out but also feel natural is something which is impressive. It's not in your face aggressive branding however it feels organic, natural and beautiful, using soft colours to blend everything together as if a gift from Freyja herself. It's Norse Pagan mythology but not as blood stained, grubby Vikings but as elegance and one with it nature and its surroundings. Being priced at £15 is on the top end of pricing however a look which can match the price tag.
Inside the bottle
By Odin's Beard Crafts has not skimped on the ingredients list and pumped the product to the brim of carrier oils to give your beard satisfaction. Below is the long list :
Sweet Almond Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Sunflower Oil, Avocado Seed Oil, Hemp Oil, Apricot Oil, Kernal Oil, Rosehip Oil, Castor Oil and Vitamin E.
In my experience as a reviewer I have never come across a set of carrier oils so complex.. It has the potential to be truly magical or it can be a boiling pot of disaster as finding a balance of 3 oils can be hard enough let alone 10.
Moving into the scent profile and By Odin's Beard Crafts have taken another almighty swoop from the ingredients pot and thrown a bunch in together. Here's the list :
Cedarwood, Cardamom, Clove Bud, Spearmint, Patchouli, Cinnamon Leaf.
That's a total of 16 ingredients within a single 30ml bottle. It's just either pure genius or utterly madness how this concept ever got post the initial drawing board. It's something which is simply not done and By Odin's Beard Crafts are looking to take you beard game to glory within Valhalla.
Upon receiving the package I was thoroughly impressed with the look of the bottle. It screams elegance, bespoke and very brand oriented as Vikings where known for their fine crafts and having the wood top is simply class.
Unscrewing the lid releases a furious battle of aromas in a blood thirsty survival of the fittest who are all fighting for attention. Taking charge from the off is the cinnamon leaf, cardamom and clove bud which brings a fierce heat and creating a deep punching combination which rumbles through the air and into you nostrils like a thunder bolt from Thor. This almighty power is backed by the spearmint which brings a slight zest of freshness, reigning down over the top like bolt drawn arrows penetrating the armour of the clove bud. As the scent begins to settle the deeper earthy scents start to seep though like at the end of a blood soaked battle it glides across the top removing the freshness and creating a calm over the initial scents. The warmth from this scent continues to burn like an ever last ember from the eternal flame until finally it falls away past the 7 hour mark.
The oil itself is bright golden in colour like glistening treasure and has a medium / thin viscosity. Rubbing the oil together is magical because you can not get away from the aromas bursting out as it warms. It has great hold within the beard and clings to your face like however it feels almost instantly nourishing. The deep penetrative oils seep though at around the 4 hour mark and a small amount of dry beard begins to creep in however only a very small amount as the other thicker oils stand firm to try and pick up and of the slack left behind for another 3 or 4 hours before I found the battle was lost and the "drenger" dry beard wins.
The mix of fast penetrating and thicker nourishing oils its truly magical and something which I really loved. Your getting the best of both however there are slight drawbacks with this as you do begin to experience a slight dry beard a little earlier than I had hoped however there's still plenty of nourishment left to ensure it doesn't become too much of an issue. The scent profile is one I have never experienced before and one which will be staying with me for a long time. The mix is powerful, warming, fresh and calming all at at same time and an aroma which hits past the 7 hour mark is impressive considering how many other scents are in the mix. It doesn't evolve drastically as the clove and cinnamon do take most of the brunt and its only subtle changes which can be picked up as the day goes by but these subtle changes keeps in check the burden these powerful aromas can posses.
Overall this has entered as one of my all time favourites and a product which I hope others will enjoy as well. It's not for the faint hearted, plus it is a little more expensive than the current accepted norm so if you don't like overpowering scents then you should avoid this however if you want to support a product which is using natural ingredients, blending them fantastically then your investing in a company that has the potential to raise the bar for what can and can't be done within a UK beard oil.
